‘Axe the Food Tax’ campaign approved by Governor
The US state of Kansas is to phase out sales tax on food and food ingredients, covering “substances, whether in liquid, concentrated, solid, frozen, dried or dehydrated form, that are sold for ingestion or chewing by humans and are consumed for their taste or nutritional value”. It also includes bottled water, confectionary, dietary supplements, soft drinks, and food sold via vending machines.
Foods that are excluded include:
- Prepared foods that are ready to eat or just need reheating
- Food sold along with eating utensils provided by the seller
- Alcoholic drinks
- Tobacco
The 6.5% tax will be phased out as follows:
- January 2023: 4%
- January 2024: 2%
- January 2025: 0%
