Sweden raises VAT registration threshold 2025

Parliament approves VAT registration threshold rise to acknowledge record inflation

Sweden’s Riksdag parliament has signed-off on raising the 2025 annual sales threshold for VAT registration from SEK 80,000 to SEK 120,000 (approximately €10,100). The threshold was last raised in 2022.

This new threshold will apply from 1 January 2025. It is subject to publication in the 2024 budget, and approval by Parliament.

July 2022 update: Bill presented to hike Value Added Tax registration level to take thousands out of tax net; other COVID-19 support

Sweden is to increase its Value Added Tax Registration threshold to SEK 80,000 (approx €7,800) per annum from SEK 30,000. Businesses providing taxable supplies below this threshold may voluntarily opt to register.

The new threshold applies from 1 July 2022. Read more about Swedish VAT in our country guide.

The change was included in the 2020 budget.  Other VAT changes included:

  • Option to rollover deferred VAT liabilities due to the COVID-19 disruption; payments may be delayed again from current due date of March and April of 2022
  • Shift from 12% to 6% reduced VAT rate for bicycle repairs and clothing
  • Temporary VAT exemption on COVID-19 related supplies
  • Withdrawal of advertising tax from 1 January 2022
