US South Dakota cuts sales tax to 4.2%

4-year cut from 4.5% to 4.2% approved by Governor – 1 July 2023 until 30 June 2027

South Dakota’s two legislative chambers, the Senate and House, have voted for a four year temporary reduction in the sales tax rate (gross receipts tax) from 4.5% to 4.2%. This reduction, to help alleviate the effect of recent inflation, was signed off by the state Governor, Kristi Noem, on 21 March 2022. The Governor had been insisting on an exemption for groceries – but abandoned this demand.

South Dakota recently voted to end the sales tax transaction exemption threshold from July of this year. The state was also behind the economic nexus Supreme Court ruling in 2018 which enables states to levy sales tax on sellers from out-of-state.
